Survey Finds Worker Productivity in Canada Increases During Busy Holiday Season

TORONTO, Dec. 4, 2018 /CNW/ - It's the most wonderful time of the year — for worker productivity? Professionals may simply be looking to land on the "nice" list, but 55 per cent of Canadian respondents in a recent Accountemps survey said they get more work done during the holidays.

Of the respondents who see their output falling this time of year, greater year-end workloads (35 per cent) and personal commitments (33 per cent) were noted as the main culprits. Other productivity impediments cited included cold/flu season (22 per cent) and holiday shopping (11 per cent).

"The holiday season can be an incredibly demanding time as many workers rush to finalize year-end projects and check things off their lists, both personally and professionally," said David King, Canadian president of Accountemps. "While this push may mean greater focus in the short-term, managers need to be cognizant of the potential for employee burnout, which can affect morale moving into the new year."

"By providing teams with the resources and support to better manage year-end workloads and deadlines, employers can help ease the pressure on their staff, allowing them to truly relax and enjoy the season," added King.

Accountemps offers employers these helpful management tips for the holidays:

  • Consolidate celebrations. Schedule and plan one special event all employees can participate in rather than having several impromptu affairs.
  • Promote work-life balance. Encourage workers to take time away from the office to recharge and enjoy the season with family and friends.
  • Hire holiday help. Bring in temporary staff to keep projects on track, alleviate heavy workloads and cover employee vacations.

The online survey was developed by Accountemps and conducted by an independent research firm. It includes responses from more than 500 workers 18 years of age or older and employed in office environments in Canada.
