Survey: Nearly Half of Employees Would Keep Working if They Were to Hit the Jackpot

TORONTO, Jan. 15, 2015 /CNW/ - The saying "money isn't everything" just may hold true, suggests a recent Accountemps survey. Nearly half (47 per cent) of employees interviewed said they would continue to work in some capacity if they were to receive a financial windfall; 26 per cent of this group would choose to stay in their current jobs.

The survey was developed by Accountemps, the world's first and largest specialized staffing service for temporary accounting, finance and bookkeeping professionals, and conducted by an independent research firm. It includes responses from more than 260 employees 18 years of age and older who work in an office environment in Canada.

Workers were asked, "If you were to suddenly strike it rich, which of the following best captures your attitude about work?" Their responses:

I would quit working

41%

I would stay at my job

26%

I would continue to work but look for a new type of job

21%

Don't know

12%

100%

"Most people find work rewarding as it provides a sense of purpose," said Dianne Hunnam-Jones, Canadian district president of Accountemps. "At some point, everyone has dreamt about what they would do if they were to suddenly come into a lot of money. For those who decide to remain active in the workforce, the unexpected wealth may provide the option to explore alternative career paths, such as volunteering, part-time work, or even starting your own business."
