Robert Half Technology survey finds more than half of Canadian companies don't have a mobile app for customers and have no immediate plans to develop one

TORONTO, March 25, 2014 /CNW/ - Although mobile communications has become an increasingly important channel for information-sharing, more than half (54 per cent) of CIOs surveyed by Robert Half Technology said they currently don't have a mobile app for customers, and have no immediate plans to develop one. These organizations have some catching up to do but they're on the right track - in the same survey, 77 per cent of firms said they have implemented some type of mobile technology strategy, with the majority (61 per cent) reporting that they use a blend of apps and mobile-friendly web pages.

The survey is based on more than 270 interviews with chief information officers (CIOs) from a random sample of Canadian companies. Robert Half Technology is a leading provider of IT professionals on a project and full-time basis.

CIOs were asked, "Has your company developed a mobile application for customers and clients, or do you plan to offer one in the next 12 months?" The responses:

We don't have one now and don't plan to offer one in the next 12 months     54%
We don't have one now but plan to offer one in the next 12 months     21%
      We have one now     21%
      Don't know/refused     4%
      Total     100%

CIOs were also asked, "Which best describes your company's mobile technology strategy?" The top responses:

Use of a blend of apps and mobile-friendly web pages     61%
      No mobile strategy currently     19%
Favour creating mobile-friendly web pages over apps       9%
Favour creating apps over mobile-friendly web pages     7%
      Don't know/refused     4%
      Total     100%

"While most organizations have a mobile technology strategy, many are not making the leap over to the use of mobile apps as a means to connect with customers and clients," says Deborah Bottineau, Senior Regional Manager of Robert Half Technology and The Creative Group. "Organizations that aren't looking to develop mobile applications are potentially missing out on the opportunity to further engage with their business audience."

"As mobile devices increasingly become a part of day-to-day life, businesses will want to make it easy for customers and clients to connect with them through mobile platforms," says Bottineau. "In the next few years, this will likely become more of an expectation from consumers for doing business, and less of an option."
